ER-Positive Tumors and Hormone Therapy

Is tamoxifen still beneficial after a double mastectomy in premenopausal women? Does the benefit outweigh the risk of endometrial cancer?

Tamoxifen is still recommended for premenopausal women with early stage breast cancer who have had mastectomies because it can help prevent a distant recurrence (metastatic disease).

Even when a woman is node-negative, it’s still possible for there to be cells that have escaped and that are floating around, and the tamoxifen will deal with them.

Endometrial cancer is very rare in premenopausal women because younger women are still getting their periods and sloughing off the uterine lining.

All premenopausal women should talk to their oncologists about the benefits and risks of tamoxifen for their specific stage and type of breast cancer.
