Most women with LCIS (lobular carcinoma in situ) do not develop breast cancer

Lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) is not breast cancer. It is a diagnosis that means you are at increased risk of developing breast cancer. The lobules sit on the tips of the breast ducts. In women with LCIS, the lobules are filled with small round cells that are not supposed to be there. Close follow-up is recommended for women with LCIS. Seeing a specialist regularly will ensure if the LCIS becomes a cancer, it will be caught early. Surgery may be an option for some women. Another option is taking a hormone blocker daily for five years to reduce breast cancer risk. There are both risks and benefits to this approach. Most women with LCIS do not develop breast cancer.
